String field theory is aimed at providing a background independent formulation of string theory by describing different backgrounds as solutions to the classical field equations.
We will show how every given D-brane system in the bosonic string can be explicitly represented as a classical solution of open string field theory and we will prove background independence of open string field theory in a fully non-perturbative way.
Going in the opposite direction, we will also show how solving the SFT equation of motion can give an exact approach to backgrounds which don't have a known worldsheet description, taking as an example the Higgs branch of the D3/D(-1) system, and the related ADHM moduli space.
