Description

The long-standing and tantalizing discrepancy between the experimental
value and the Standard Model prediction of the muon anomalous magnetic
moment ($a_\mu$) has kept hadronic corrections under scrutiny for several
years, because they contribute with the largest error to the theory
uncertainty.

In this seminar, the status of the proposed MUonE experiment will be
reviewed: MUonE aims at a high precision measurement of the QED running
coupling constant in the space-like region, from which the full hadronic
contribution can be extracted and used to provide a new and independent
determination of the leading-order hadronic correction to $a_\mu$. The
experiment will exploit the scattering of high energy muons on atomic
electrons of a low Z target and is expected to run at CERN. The project is
currently under review by the SPSC CERN committee.

The experiment requires a high level control of systematic uncertainties,
both of experimental and theoretical origin. In particular, QED radiative
corrections to the $\mu e\to \mu e$ process must be included at the
next-to-next-to-leading order, and consistently matched with resummation
of higher-orders.

The challenges posed by the experiment to theory predictions will be
discussed and recent work and progress presented in detail.
