Description
Assigning the asymptotic behaviour of physical observables is part of the definition of a theory that, for gauge theories, may enforce a non-trivial structure of the corresponding asymptotic symmetry group. We shall review the relevance of the latter for spin-one gauge theories and for asymptotically flat gravity, while also exploring its relevance in some less customary scenarios, like higher-spin gauge theories and dual formulations.
Some emphasis will be placed on the (putative) differences between D=4 and D>4, in an attempt to a critical survey of the tension existing between some dimension-independent results, like Weinberg’s soft theorems, and their interpretation in terms of asymptotic symmetries, until recently most commonly acknowledged to exist only in D=4.
