Simple five-dimensional models provide calculable and predictive effective descriptions of hadrons.
I will first review the general framework and discuss some of its phenomenological implications for
the physics of mesons. I will then show that these models also contain baryons, which arise as
solitons analog to skyrmions. Differently from skyrmions, however, the 5d soliton physics is
calculable in the effective theory so that this model provides a concrete realization of the Skyrme's
idea of baryons as solitons in the theory of mesons. Phenomenological implications on the physics
of baryons will be discussed.
