Description
The detection of coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering is among the most challenging tasks of modern neutrino physics. This weak neutral current process, which has only very recently been discovered by the COHERENT experiment, opens the window to new physics within and beyond the standard model. Since the cross-section is orders of magnitude higher than that of electron-electron scattering, it allows a miniaturization of the detector mass. In this talk, I will review existing and planned experimental approaches to detect coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering and discuss their potential for fundamental neutrino, nuclear and astroparticle physics. I will focus on the recent discovery by the COHERENT experiment at the Oak Ridge National Lab, report about the ν-cleus experiment that we have initiated in Munich and present the most recent results of this new field. As an outlook, I will discuss a potential next-generation solar-neutrino experiment using coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering.
