Description
The European Spallation Source has been designed to allow a quite ambitious instrument suite which will challenge the state of the art of thermal neutron detection in terms of expected count rate, spatial resolution and area coverage. In this framework, ESS Bilbao, the institution managing the Spanish contribution to ESS, has started activities complementary to the established research line of ESS detector group, which is focused on gaseous detectors based on 10B4C converters. The evaluation of the existent position sensitive technologies based on scintillators is one of these. Additionally, quite an effort has been devoted to the visualization of single neutron detections in scintillators using conventional optics and commercial camera sensors. This work  will be seminal for the development of a new generation of micrometric anger cameras. Finally, the development of a low mass neutron monitor on the model of the n_TOF SiMoN able to cope with the high count rate and dose.
