Description
Enrico Fermi (1901-1954) counts among the most distinguished physicists of the 20th century. I will present an overview of his life, assessing successively the period up to his nomination at La Sapienza’s Physics Department (1918-1926), his turn from theoretical to experimental physics (1926-1934), his Nobel Prize winning research (1934-1938), and his neutron-related work in the United States (1938-1954). I will take some pride in highlighting his excellent relations with Dutch colleagues (Ehrenfest, Uhlenbeck, Goudsmit).
