It has been shown in the past that a nonlocal (Riegert) action reproduces perturbative results related to the trace anomaly and the breaking of conformal symmetry in D=4 conformal field theories. The issue whether such an action is consistent or not has been widely debated in the literature. I report on recent progress in the study of this problem using a reconstruction method that builds correlators of 3 point functions by solving the conformal constraints in momentum space.
