Description
Abstract:

Supernovae, the final fate of massive stars, allow for fundamental tests of  stellar evolution theories and are unique probes of stellar populations and star formation history on cosmological scale. In the last decade, extensive transient searches opened new lines of research, e.g. with the discovery of super-luminous events or the real time observation of the convulsion of massive stars just before explosion.  After an overview of the recent entries in the SN zoo, I will focus on the  recent measurements of SN rates, their uncertainties and implications for the SN progenitor scenarios.
I will also comment on the completeness and performances of current SN searches and on the prospects of future projects.
