Description
On September 14, 2015 at 09:50:45 UTC the two detectors of the LIGO Observatory simultaneously observed a transient gravitational-wave signal. The PATH that led to the first direct detection of gravitational waves and the first observation of a binary black hole merger will be reviewed. Physical implications and near future prospects of the LIGO-Virgo observatory will be discussed. Particular emphasis will be given to the contribution of the Padova-Trento group to the discovery.
