Chiara P. Salemi: "Tuning in to axion dark matter with DMRadio"

Description

Axions are one of the most compelling answers to the open question of the identity of the universe's dark matter. Detecting them, however, is a challenge, due to their tiny expected couplings to visible matter and their very low, unknown mass. We can overcome these challenges by enhancing the axions' conversion to photons using strong magnetic fields and tunable, high- Q resonators, and we can detect the resulting signals with superconducting quantum sensors. Here I will discuss how we search for highly motivated low- mass axions using a lumped-element detection method. I will present progress on the under-construction DMRadio-50L experiment, talk about a new effort starting at Berkeley, CAL- Pathfinder, and lay out the R&D path toward future experiments with QCD axion sensitivity.
