Description
In the seminar we will review recent progress in ring imaging Cherenkov counters for the next generation of particle physics experiments. We will discuss the importance of detecting single photons with excellent time precision, and will review R+D of the novel very fast light sensors with single photon detection abilities, micro-channel plate PMTs, hybrid avalanche photo-diodes (HAPD), and SiPMs. We will also discuss an application of such sensors in Cherenkov light based TOF-PET medical imaging with time resolution below 100ps. Finally, we will review results of tests with a TOF-PET prototype and possible ways on how to proceed.
