 )\n\nIn 1981\, Gaillard and Zumino studied a broad class of models — inc
 luding axiverse models and several extended supergravities as special case
 s — \nwhose equations of motion are classically invariant under continuo
 us symplectic transformations acting on the gauge sector. The standard lor
 e holds that\, \nat the quantum level\, these symmetries are broken to an 
 integral subgroup\, usually identified with the U-duality group. I will ar
 gue that\, in fact\, \na much larger subgroup of rational symplectic trans
 formations can be associated with quantum symmetries\, albeit realized thr
 ough non-invertible topological defects\,\nand I will discuss some of thei
