 are)\n\n Abstract:  Precise and versatile dose calculation engines are o
 f primary interest for both clinical practice and research in particle the
 rapy. The newest clinical dose engines are based on Monte Carlo (MC) codes
 \, and GPU-accelerated MC implementations have recently gained attention f
 or their ability to combine time efficiency with high computational accura
 cy. Research codes can complement clinical tools by providing additional f
 eatures and flexibility\, which can be exploited to extend the use of MC c
 odes for further clinical or pre-clinical studies.\nHere I present\, in th
 e context of the proton therapy center in Trento\, the use of FRED\, a fas
 t user-friendly MC code running on GPUs\, as a powerful independent tool t
 o perform fundamental and clinical research in the field of particle thera
 py. After implementing the proton beam model in FRED\, several application
 s become possible: from supporting routine clinical workflows and assessin
 g the dosimetric features of delivered proton therapy (PT) plans\, to enab
 ling radiobiological evaluations and exploring emerging research areas suc
 h as Ultra-High-Dose-Rate (UHDR) irradiations and FLASH radiotherapy.\n \
