Description
Abstract: Precise and versatile dose calculation engines are of primary interest for both clinical practice and research in particle therapy. The newest clinical dose engines are based on Monte Carlo (MC) codes, and GPU-accelerated MC implementations have recently gained attention for their ability to combine time efficiency with high computational accuracy. Research codes can complement clinical tools by providing additional features and flexibility, which can be exploited to extend the use of MC codes for further clinical or pre-clinical studies.
Here I present, in the context of the proton therapy center in Trento, the use of FRED, a fast user-friendly MC code running on GPUs, as a powerful independent tool to perform fundamental and clinical research in the field of particle therapy. After implementing the proton beam model in FRED, several applications become possible: from supporting routine clinical workflows and assessing the dosimetric features of delivered proton therapy (PT) plans, to enabling radiobiological evaluations and exploring emerging research areas such as Ultra-High-Dose-Rate (UHDR) irradiations and FLASH radiotherapy.
