 some ideas developed over the past years on how string-inspired holography
  can make contact with real-world QCD\, both at high temperature and high 
 baryon density. Suitably engineered holographic models can capture many qu
 alitative and even semi-quantitative features of strongly coupled QCD. I w
 ill briefly review how such models can be used to study the quark-gluon pl
 asma\, the QCD phase diagram\, and dense matter relevant for neutron stars
