Cari e care,
nell’ultima riunione abbiamo iniziato a parlare dell’organizzazione della nuova Hackathon che si svolgerà a Pavia a Novembre. Stiamo ancora cercando di capire le date definitive in base alla disponibilità delle aule e, appena avrò notizie, vi farò sapere.

Nel frattempo, vi invio questa mail per raccogliere le proposte di esercizi in maniera organica.
Per chi non conosce bene l’evento, solitamente la nostra Hackathon è strutturata su 4 giorni: due mezze giornate e due giorni interi. Nei giorni pieni, la mattina si fanno lezioni frontali o piccole esercitazioni in preparazione all’esercizio del pomeriggio. Nel pomeriggio, gli/le studenti svolgono l’esercizio guidato (4 ore) in presenza di un paio di tutor che sono a disposizione per aiutare. Chi ha partecipato nelle scorse edizioni ha sempre apprezzato il fatto di avere molto tempo per svolgere l’esercizio guidato con la possibilità di chiedere aiuto. Affinchè questa modalità sia efficace è necessario che il tempo di allenamento dell’algoritmo sia abbastanza basso (pochi minuti) perchè così i/le partecipanti hanno tempo di fare molte prove. Infine, gli esercizi andranno testati sulla piattaforma per assicurarci che tutto funzioni bene. Vi chiederei quindi di mandare un breve abstract sull’esercizio che vorreste proporre che contenga almeno le seguenti informazioni:
• il modello AI che volete presentare;
• l’ambito della fisica a cui viene applicato;
• se necessita di accelerazione GPU;
• se necessita di pacchetti python che non sono già nei nostri ambienti virtuali, come pacchetti particolari o non standard;
• i nomi e gli indirizzi mail di uno o più referenti che possiamo contattare.

Ho segnato i nomi di chi si è proposto nella riunione di lunedì o via mail ma vi pregherei in ogni caso di mandare a me e Lucio un abstract in maniera da avere un quadro più chiaro.

Dear all,

In our last meeting, we began discussing the organisation of the upcoming Hackathon, which will take place in Pavia this November. We are still working to confirm the final dates based on room availability, and I will let you know as soon as I have more information.

In the meantime, I am writing to collect exercise proposals in an organised way. For those who are not familiar with the event, our Hackathon usually runs over four days: two half-days and two full days. On the full days, the mornings are dedicated to lectures or small exercises to prepare for the afternoon’s main task. In the afternoons, students work on a guided exercise (4 hours), supported by one or two tutors who are available to help. Participants from past editions have always appreciated having ample time to complete the exercise with the opportunity to ask questions. To ensure this format is effective, the algorithm’s training time should be reasonably short (a few minutes), so that participants can carry out multiple tests. Finally, the exercises will need to be tested on the platform to ensure everything works correctly. I kindly ask you to send a short abstract of the exercise you would like to propose, including at least the following information:

• The AI model you intend to present
• The area of physics it applies to
• Whether it requires GPU acceleration
• Whether it needs any Python packages that are not already included in our virtual environments (i.e. unusual or non-standard libraries)
• The names and email addresses of one or more contacts we can reach out to

I have noted the names of those who volunteered during Monday’s meeting, but I would kindly ask everyone to send an abstract to both myself and Lucio, so we can have a clearer overview.
