Summary
This study presents a β-radiation-assisted exfoliation approach to delaminate Zn–Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets for high-performance nanocomposite membranes. The defect-free exfoliation process increased the BET surface area by 61% (304.0 m² g⁻¹) and reduced the basal spacing from 0.893 to 0.756 nm, indicating thinner, well-dispersed nanosheets with minimal aggregation. The exfoliated LDH (eLDH) incorporated into polysulfone substrates and spray-coated with polyethylenimine (PEI) produced membranes with higher hydrophilicity, significantly improved water flux, and enhanced ion rejection. Mechanistic analysis revealed that exfoliation exposed more active sites and reduced transport tortuosity, enabling better interfacial compatibility. This work demonstrates that β-radiation exfoliation offers a scalable, environmentally friendly route for fabricating advanced nanomaterials and membranes for isotope and wastewater separation applications.
