Summary
Innovative radioisotopes for theragnostic applications, including ⁸⁹Zr, ⁵²Mn, copper, and terbium, are being developed at the IRCCS Sacro Cuore Don Calabria Hospital. Proton irradiation of enriched solid targets on a TR-19 medical cyclotron is employed to optimize production, purification, and quality control processes. While ⁸⁹Zr is routinely produced at ≈2 GBq, other isotopes are under development with MBq-level activities. Collaborative efforts with national laboratories and universities support preclinical validation, demonstrating the feasibility of hospital-based isotope production and providing initial data to inform future large-scale production in specialized facilities.
