In this work we will retrace the steps leading to the discovery of nuclear fission, highlighting Lise Meitner’s crucial contribution and illustrating how this story encourages reflection on the making and sharing of scientific knowledge, and on the influence of social and cultural contexts on the recognition of scientists’ work, especially that of women in physics.
