Due to immense progress in recent years in theoretical and experimental studies of the
transverse structure of the nucleon one is starting to understand transverse parton motion not
as a random uniform distribution, but rather as naturally correlated with the parton and
nucleon spins. The 3D structure of the nucleon is encoded in transverse momentum
distribution (TMD) functions describing partonic distributions for different combinations of
spins of partons and nucleons, and Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) describing spatial
distributions of partons. The measurement and understanding of these functions (including
the Collins and Sivers functions, and GPD E) are of world-wide interest, with experimental
programs at BELLE, COMPASS, RHIC, and future facilities such as EIC and GSI. In the
area of deep inelastic semi-inclusive and hard exclusive scattering, the JLab12 program will
be completely dominant for the foreseeable future. Several proposals were approved by JLab
PAC to study TMDs and GPDs in different processes involving semi-inclusive and exclusive
pion and kaon production with CLAS12 using unpolarized and polarized hydrogen and
deuteron targets.
In this talk we present an overview of the latest developments in studies of TMDs and GPDs
and future measurements, focused on the JLab12 program.
