Near-Field Spectroscopy investigation of the strong coupling between an intersubband transition in a quantum well and a plasmonic antenna.

18:00 - 18:20
I will present the experimental results about the detection of the strong coupling between a plasmonic antenna and an intersubband transition in a semiconductor quantum well. A plasmonic antenna is a metal device in which the electrons are free. An intersubband transition is an electronic transition arising in the quantized energy levels in a potential quantum well, which is obtained by heterostructures of different semiconductors. When these two excitations energetically overlap, they give rise to an exotic state of matter called polariton which is a mixed state between matter and light and the regime achieved is called strong-coupling.

Shining Light on Quantum Dots
Michele Rota
18:30 - 18:50
Semiconductor quantum dots are arising as excellent candidates for the emission of quantum light. These nanostructures can emit single and entangled photons with the potential of on demand operation. Several demonstrations of quantum protocols appeared in literature in the last years using light from these quantum emitters and the rapid improvement of the figures of merit promises new groundbreaking results in the next years. But what is a quantum dot? This talk has the aim to explain in simple terms what a quantum dot is and what can someone do with it when shining light on it.
