40 years after its formulation, the Hopfield model and its variants are still an invaluable tool to conceptualize how intelligent behaviour emerges from the simple interactions among neurons in a brain. After a brief introduction to the brain structure and the complex system physics techniques that can be used to model it, I will present the main features of the model, and give a glimpse on our current research on this subject.

Glass excitation modes at low temperature are a central topic of condensed matter: central quantities quantifying the response of the system, such as the specific heat and the shear-response function, depend on them. In recent years, by means of phenomenological theories first and computer simulations secondly, notable progress has been made. In this talk, after briefly introducing the problem and the concept of Spin Glass, I will illustrate a Mean Field Spin Glass model, the Vector p-spin, which is a very simple toy model of the glassy transition. I will show that, even at the Mean Field level, soft modes are related to localised eigenvectors.
