Description
Elastic electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon are measured over a broad range of momentum transfers. These measurements provide an insight into the fundamental properties of hadrons and reflect their structure in terms of elementary constituents. However, measurements of the proton electric form factor with different experimental techniques produced significantly different results for large momentum transfers.Two-photon exchange is a higher-order electromagnetic effect which is the most likely candidate to cause this controversy. Dedicated experiments that are underway or in preparation in several laboratories will address the role of higher-order radiative effects in precision experiments on electron-proton scattering.
