Description
We will show that extreme confinement of fluids has
significant consequences. First, thermodynamic properties follow from a
lower-dimensional fluid with renormalized interactions. This implies, e.g.,
that a phase transition point shifts proportional to the square of the
confinement length. Second, the equation of state, the density profile,
etc. can be obtained by a thermodynamic perturbation theory. Third, the
equilibration of the fluid slows down. The relaxation times exhibit
power-law divergence with exponents which differ from those expected from
van Hoveâ s work on equilibration. Molecular dynamic calculations will be
presented confirming the predicted exponents.
