Tour description
This tour will take you to one of the most impressive islands of the Tuscan archipelago: Pianosa, a former high security prison and now a beautiful National Park.
After many years spent in solitude, and after the famous jail closed, the island of Pianosa has opened its doors to a restricted number of visitors.
The accessible areas are still fairly limited and include the outskirts of the harbour area and the village, and excursions may only be taken with a professional guide. In the village visitors are welcomed by the unusual architectural style of Pianosa harbour built by Ponticelli, one of the first prison governors. Equally fascinating is the Teglia Fortress, an historic building dating back to Napoleonic age. A walk along the beach will take you to the back of the ruins of the baths of Agrippa Postumus; he was confined and then killed on Pianosa to allow Tiberius to take power.
Then you’ll have free time for lunch and for a swim in the crystal clear waters of Cala Giovanna, one the most beautiful bays on the island and the only authorised place for swimming. You’ll then return by boat to Marina di Campo.
This tour is an unforgettable and unique experience on the island that is also known as Devil’s Island, where only a limited number of passengers are allowed to disembark every day
(Closed and comfortable shoes, long pants, sunscreen and drinking water are highly recommended)

2. GUIDED URBAN TREKKING AT PORTOFERRAIO
(max 50 participants)

Duration: Approximately 4 hours
Departure: at 15:00 from Hotel Hermitage
Transport: A/C De Luxe Coach

This tour takes guests through the Medici Fortifications of Portoferraio dating back to 1548, once called “Cosmopoli” and allows them to discover an unexpected town  from the top of the strongholds. They visit the “Falcone Fort” with the permanent  exhibition on the foundation of Portoferraio. Then they reach the Napoleon’s theatre “I Vigilanti” built by the Emperor on the ruins of an old church during his exile on the Island.  Outside the theatre a pictoresque “piazzetta” with a breathtaking view on the sea and the roofs of Portoferraio.  Here a tasting refreshment will welcome guests and will allow them to enjoy local appetizers and a selection of Elba wines. On the way back, guests will enjoy a nice walk  downhill towards the main square and through the “Porta a Mare” “Gateway to the Sea” to the Darsena, shelter for elegant boats and rich of cafè and exclusive shops

3. CALAMITA MINES IN  CAPOLIVERI
(max 50 participants)

Duration: Approximately 4 hours
Departure: at 15:00 from Hotel Hermitage
Transport: A/C De Luxe Coach

The tour takes passengers to a very special area of the island: the east coast with the picturesque  village of Capoliveri and the impressive Calamita mining area.
After  a panoramic drive to  Capoliveri guests will  reach the Ginevro mine  by minivans. The tour  includes an exciting descent into the tunnels of the mine, where magnetite was extracted between deep wells and chasms, along the old mining stations. On the surface guests will have the chance to  pick up  some “magnetite” lodestone.
Next stop the enchanting village of Capoliveri, which preserves an almost medieval atmosphere in its architecture, sober yet graceful and elegant.  A viewpoint offers a superb panorama  out over the gulfs of Lacona and Marina di Campo, at the foot of a wild headland covered with bush, agaves and prickly pears.  The coasts of Capoliveri are some of the most beautiful on the island, with overhanging cliffs visited by thousands of sea-gulls, and small bays with crystal-clear water.  Enjoy a leisurely stroll through the twisting old streets followed by some free time to browse among the villages tiny shops and boutiques.
