We analyse the role that non-perturbative techniques, such as the lattice formulation, can play in  understanding the dynamics of large N gauge theories. Concepts like volume independence are described. Recent progress in setting up a successful methodology is reported. Some  results using these techniques are presented, including some work in progress.
