Description
The importance of the 1964 discovery of CP violation (CPV) in neutral kaon decays was recognized by the scientific community with the 1980 Nobel Prize attribution to V. Fitch and J. Cronin. A strong research program started after such discovery to ascertain the origin of this effect by looking for the "direct" CP violation in the decay of K mesons, with experimental efforts in Brookhaven, Fermilab and CERN. Several generations of increasingly precise experiments (the latest being NA31 and NA48 at CERN, E731 and KTeV at FNAL) led to the final confirmation in 1999 of the existence of the "direct" CPV, 35 years after the first observation of the phenomenon. A recollection of some of the people involved in the search of direct CPV intends to retrace some steps of this long and difficult research in the occasion of the 85-th birthday of Italo Mannelli, who devoted to this and related investigations a large part of his scientific activity.
