Description
Accelerator-Based Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (AB-BNCT) is being established worldwide as the future modality to start the era of in-hospital facilities. There are projects in Russia, Japan, UK, Italy, Israel and Argentina to develop AB-BNCT around different types of accelerators. The Argentine project is aimed to develop a Tandem-ElectroStatic Quadrupole (TESQ) accelerator facility. The final goal is a machine capable of delivering 30 mA of up to 2.5 MeV protons to be used in conjunction with a target based on the 7Li(p,n)7Be reaction. In a first stage, the accelerator will be of about 1.4 MeV. At this energy, no neutrons can be produced through the 7Li(p,n)7Be and the 9Be(d,n)10B reaction appears as a very attractive alternative. We shall discuss its potential use as a possible neutron source for BNCT treatments. Present status and recent progress of the whole project will also be presented.
