Description
In the last 3 years the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo gravitational wave detectors have detected a population of coalescing compact binaries - neutron stars and black holes. With these first sources we are beginning to glimpse the population of such transient events throughout the universe. I will describe recent results and show how we can learn the properties of these objects from the noisy detector data. I will then look ahead at how gravitational wave astronomy can combine information from many such events to reveal the details of their populations.
