Description
When designing detector readout electronics for high energy physics experiments, a growing effort has to be dedicated to the analysis of how the system is going to work in an ionizing radiation environment. A quick review on how radiation affects deep sub-micron electronics is given, together with examples of a few ASICs recently used in the Electronics Division of INFN Bologna. A great emphasis is also given to the FPGA devices: since they are now being used closer to the detector than they used to be in the past, the necessity of choosing the right devices and protecting them from unwanted effects arises. Some direct experiences of the Electronics Division are also given, especially the recent proton irradiation tests performed at the Proton Therapy center in Trento.
