Description
National Centre for Nuclear Research, NCBJ, located in Otwock near Warsaw, carries out research programs in the field of practical applications of radionuclides and in radiopharmaceutical development,  based on the MARIA Research Reactor, a powerful nuclear research reactor as a neutron irradiation facility, and the Radioisotope Centre POLATOM, the certified research and radiopharmaceutical development unit, promoting implementation of the developed processes by insuring reliable, safe and standardized (e.g. GLP, GMP) manufacturing methods. In the last years several important achievements have been noted at NCBJ such as the development of original 99mTc-labelled diagnostic agent for imaging of tumors expressing somatostatin receptors or technologies for production of 90Y and 177Lu, radiopharmaceutical precursors used in peptide receptor radionuclide therapy. Recently, the computational capacity of Świerk Computing Centre (CIŚ) added to the modern techniques used in the design of new pharmaceuticals.  To enlarge the spectrum of available radionuclides, the existing infrastructure will be complemented with 30 MeV cyclotron (p, d and alpha particles), which is higher than typically installed 11-18 MeV medical cyclotrons, and the supporting laboratories. The research infrastructure located at the National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ) is utilized in research programs oriented at design and pre-clinical evaluation of new drugs carrying the radioactive probe (radiopharmaceuticals) and other multimodality probes, suitable for diagnostic or therapeutic application, with the particular focus on the biologically active carrier molecules which can be traced at the cellular  and molecular level. Research programs are supported by method standardization and the development of novel diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for medicinal use.
