Description
A high-density colour-deconfined state of strongly-interacting matter (QGP) is expected to be formed in high-energy collisions of heavy nuclei. ALICE's main focus is on exploring the physics of this strongly interacting matter in Pb-Pb collisions at 2.76 TeV. Observations indicate that the matter created, while initially much larger and hotter than at RHIC and SPS, still behaves like an almost perfect liquid. Emphasis will be made on jets, which are well calibrated hard probes, and the current understanding of their quenching and mechanisms of energy loss in a deconfined medium, which ultimately aims at constraining transport properties like temperature and density of the medium.
