Description
A mechanism has been proposed to explain the large polarization of Lambda's, Sigma's and their charmed counterparts, as seen in fixed target experiments in the 1980's and beyond. The model builds on the fact that an s-quark or c-quark has significant polarization from perturbative QCD applied at intermediate momentum transfers. With boosts required for recombination, hyperons with large polarizations are predicted. This can persist even at intermediate transverse momenta. We explore what transverse momenta are large enough to reveal whether or not polarized fragmentation functions could become dominant.
