Description
I describe type IIA physical realization of the unoriented topological string introduced by Walcher, its M-theory lift, and show that it allows to compute open and unoriented topological amplitudes in terms of one-loop diagram of BPS M2-brane states. I briefly consider the local Calabi-Yau case, where it is possible to make connection with gauge theory with 8 supercharges in presence of a certain defect. And finally discuss the physical superstring correlation functions in type I theory (or equivalently type II with orientifold) that compute such real topological string amplitudes.
